Lance was a neighbor's horse.  He was so old, had Cushings, and had no teeth.  He was great company in retirement for my mare for a long time.

I met this family at Key West as everyone gathered to celebrate the setting sun.  I loved their clothing and hats.  They reminded me of a Jonathan Green paintings.

I was working on letting the colors and the water play in the positive and negative spaces.

This painting reminds me of how I began gardening.  I started many years ago, assisting my grandmother in her garden.  She planted so much more than her energy could tend.  I planted, weeded and harvested more and more with her through the years.  As our garden became smaller and she sat more on the bale of straw under her apple tree, I learned how to work the soil and plan a garden.  When I planted my own, I only planted to have my own flowers to paint.  Grandma generously shared her fruits and vegetables, but not her flowers.  Now my garden grows each year.

I got my watercolors out over the summer.  I always find myself returning to this media.  I love the freshness and purity of the brushstrokes I find with watercolor.  This was one of my lessons inspired by a man who grows wonderful glads late in the summer.
